Resolved: This pump is a real problem.

Two units returned...so far. The first one was not doing its programming correctly. They gave me another. That lasted 3-4 days and got hot and stopped. They took out the "fuse" which was actually the whole circuitboard and simply made it a pump with two speeds. Actually, three. The third was "stopped" which is what happened a week later. On #3. If this doesn't work, I'm going to get my credit card company involved. Enuf. Oh yeah...at the Massapequa service center, they must have 10 of these things brought in for whatever they want to do to get them to work again. Everyone there was complaining

Follow up: I got another pump (third time is the charm) and it works. I also called the importer and we spoke for a bit about the issues.

He thinks that voltage spikes are a problem and suggests a surge suppressor. Also, he says that Island should not be pulling the circuitboard and fuse and making it a 2 speed switchable pump. They have the parts to fix the units properly and that customers should insist on the service being done correctly. (To check, unplug, remove the two screws at the back of the pump cover which contains the plug wire.

A green circuitboard nearly the the size of the motor should be in place. Don't mess with the switches.)

What the pump will do: in one mode (service), it will run at high speed for 5 minutes and then go to low speed. In the other, (auto) it will run at high for about 3-5 hours and then go to low speed.

Obviously, if you want continuous high speed, you will have to have your timer shut off and restart the pump. On my filter, the pressure shows zero in the low speed mode.

Bought defective pool robot

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
After having had an aquabot classic pool robot for 12 satified years, we moved and last summer had inground pool built and went to island recreational and bought a different model (Aquabot XL) for $499. We used this robot a dozen times until today went to use and both robot/power source pwere dead. I bought this model because the guy in store told me this was top of the line, a better cleaner and it looked sleeker than the original Aquabot Classic. (Guy in store was wrong and I was an ***) I did my own research and found that this model leases the name but made elsewhere, (not sure I understand this). The service guy at Island Recreational told me most of these model wind up back defective! The salesman said service guy is wrong! The store gave me full credit for the Aquabot XL and I paid $350. Difference and upgraded to the Aquabot Turbo which is cleaning pool as I write this without any problem. My complaint is the guys in this store cheain ALL give different information about these robots which are very nice but are very EXPENSIVE! There is no place near our home that sells these and I drove 50 -70miles each way as they were out of stock and no one seemed to know anything, am not happy at the way I was treated like my time does not matter, let alone the gas driving that distance. I suggest a tutorial for the guys selling these expensive albeit useful toysfor cleaning pools!

Do NOT Buy Blue Torrent pump from ISLAND RECREATION

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

My wife went to the Medford store for the supposed "PSE&G rebate Blue Torrent pump which will save us 85% electricity". It was supposed to come with "White Glove service".

First they came by and installed the pump when we were not home even though we tried to get them to come by at times when we will be. When I came home, I found out that there is no cord to plug into the outlet. When I called their customer service rep, he informed me that "the inground pool pumps don't come with the cord." At which point I said, "it would have been nice to tell me that before I bought $1000 item from your store." And, that if they didn't tell me that then, they should have told me when coming for installation so that I would have ordered the extra part for the full installation of the pump. The guys answer, "yeah they should have." And then I said, "well, what kind of white glove service is this, my pool is not operational, how do I go by rectifying this problem." Their answer, call an electrician.

So, I paid $1000 for a pump and "White glove service" to have an uninstalled pump that can never work until I get the electrician on my dime to come by and install it. Wow!! So BEWARE of this company and their "White glove service".

They will say whatever to make a sale. Do NOT BUY ANYTHING FROM THESE GUYS

Hi Port Jefferson, I had the exact same experience- i had NO idea the pump came without a power cord (ummm shouldnt't this be a standard part in order to operate it??). Anyway, I had a terrible experience with the Deer Park store back in August of 2015.

I filed a claim w/Suffolk Cty DOCA in Dec 2015. Can you believe it took Island Rec 15 Months to finally contact me?? Yes, this week a supervisor finally emailed me (thanks to the Pissed Consumer website, its a Godsend!!).

Lets see what happens. Anyway, sorry you had to go thru so much.

Bought their Warm Water Heater at Island Recreation for $1,600.00

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
I recently called them to see if they could help with fixing a leak with the water heater I purchased from them. The Warm Heater as it is called cost me $1,600.00. They claimed tha it is no longer a product they support. They would not even recommend anyone to help fix the leak. I am now stuck with this $1,600 worthless piece of machinery. They honestly have no customer service. To be honest,, anything I have ever purchased from them has been inferior and to be honest I do not know why I never learned. I strongly advise never going to any of the two stores they have left.

I have the same problem- pool heater making a lot of noise and when I call they say they won't hobnob the warranty because the warm water pool heater isn't being made and they won't stand by a company they no longer sell. Terrible service.

Blue torrent pump

Bought a new pump at island rec. The day of the install the technician said that he will install this but without the cord.

He charged me twenty dollars to switch the cord from my old pump to the new energy efficient unit. he installed it and it was leaking at the fitting so he changed one of the fittings ( fittings were different from my original pump) He charged me another twenty dollars to change the fitting. now my other fitting was leaking a bit so He put Teflon tape and said he had no more fittings left to change it. If not it would be another twenty dollars.

he gave me his phone number and said if this fitting leaks call me don't call the office. a few days later, the fitting leaked I called him left numerous messages and he never got back to me. like most of there reviews do not do business with island recreational.

this new pump is energy efficient but does not have the power as my old pump . biggest mistake I made.

Defective Two Speed Pool Pumps

Early in June (2014) I purchased Blue Torrent two speed pool pump, supposedly as part of PSE&G's mail in rebate program (for which Island Recreational asked me to fill out no rebate paperwork, letting me install the pump myself-contrary to PSE&G's rules). Less than three weeks after installing the pump, the pump stopped running. I returned to the Farmingdale store where I purchased the pump and was told I must first have the pump checked at their Massespequa repair facility and get a warranty authorization, then come back to the store. I was told however that they did not have my top discharge style pump in stock. After explaining that my pool had already been sitting with no circulation for days I was told that a truck from their warehouse wasn't due for several more days.I was told I could go to the warehouse in Deer Park myself where they did have my style pump.

I went to the repair facility, where, in the five minutes I was there, two other people brought the same pumps in with the same problem, and where the repair technician, when asked, admitted to me that these pumps had been coming in to the facility steadily. I received my warranty authorization and was told that before proceeding to the warehouse, I needed to go back to the Farmingdale store for additional paperwork.

Upon returning to the Farmingdale store, convinced that a new pump would last no longer than the first, and so I asked for a refund. Naturally they refused to refund my money citing their "refund policy" that had no provision for defective items and stated that refunds would only be issued if the item was returned in the original package, in resalable condition. After some arguing I was assured that the pump was in stock at the warehouse and resigned myself to pick it up, knowing I would be repeating this experience.

I went to the Deer Park warehouse and was given a new pump which I had to sign for. Before leaving the facility I decided to check the pump and found they had given me a side discharge model which was totally useless to me. I returned and told the warehouse man that he had given me the wrong pup. He explained to me that he knew this but that they had no more top discharge models. I asked him what I was supposed to do with this and he said he understood but wad told regardless to give me this model .

I returned to the Farmingdale store where I demanded refund which again they denied based on their "refund policy". They offered me no choice but to keep the incorrect pump.

Now my pool was sitting with no water circulation, becoming a health hazard, so I a had no choice but to purchase a purchase a pump elsewhere . Now I am stuck with a pump I can't use.

These people are knowingly selling defective equipment, offering no refunds, and cannot replace the defective equipment with good equipment.

I have the same problem never going back

Island rec seems to have a policy of *** off the customer, installations that are not complete, terrible workmanship, it's unreal

i have the same problem with the Medford store!!

Guest

MY experience is similar. The Blue Torrent is JUNK.

My electrician hooked it up and when you turned it on the GFCI breaker kept tripping. I took it back and they gave me another one thinking that is was defective. (As the other gentleman said, when I was there in the service dept to get a ticket so that I could then go to the store and get another one, two other people were bringing theirs back as well. Not a good sign.) The lectrician hooked it up and the same thing - tripped the breaker.

He said that there is an internal voltage LEAK to the case (ground), so the breaker thinks current is going through a person and properly trips the breaker for safety.

To be sure that it was a bad pump, two in a row, he hooked up the original pump and it ran fine w/o tripping the breaker. (This all started because of the incentive by PSE&G and an instant rebate from Island - This is no bargain!). Back to the store again wasting my time. I decided to tell the guy to keep his Blue Torrent and I wanted a new variable speed Hayward, same brand that I had for 25 years.

It had to be ordered. I picked it up after two weeks or so of waiting, had it installed, and it works and runs beautifully. The motor and controller are made in Germany (very high quality) and it is assembled to the pump here in the states by Hayward. The Blue Torrent comes from China.

Have you seen the new movement that is catching on? Now that China has a foothold on most of the products coming into the US, they are now dropping the quality to substandard. I will not buy their junk any more. This was the last straw.

I will pay more to get US made or German made or whatever but not China made...period.

The sad part is that my electrician told me that someone could hook up just the power wires without the ground wires and the pump will run but the GFCI protection is disabled that way. If someone then touches the pump, wet especially, and ground (standing on wet concrete with bare feet, they could get killed, a good shock at a minimum.

These pumps are DANGEROUS and no one should be selling them. Wait for the lawsuits to start.

BUY U.S.!

Island WRECK

Iam having HUGE issues with Island recreational regarding the poor shabby installation of a pool I purchased from them and had installed by them in July of last year ! From day one after signing the credit card receipt I feel like it have been taken advantage of ! After purchasing the pool its was one lie after the next regarding installation delivery date of install right on drown to after install ! The day of install they came late , forgot needed tools and took 6 hours to install the pool ! I was told when I purchased the pool the price included installation ( over $700) , after I purchased the pool i was called for the install appt, to which they then told me it would cost me additional monies for install as well as i would have to purchase the sand and blocks required for install ! At this point i of course wanted the pool installed and allready charged close to $3 thousand dollars , i wasnt going to cancel ! the day of install it costed me another $300 dollars , between the $100 for the yards of sand & bricks that I HAD PERSONALLY delivered , down to them charging me to dig the dirt, and put the filter and ladder together ! ( they charged me another $100 for putting together the ladder &filter) the crew was shabby, saying they would "work with me on the price " definately not professionals ! 6 hours later after their 2 hour lunch and forgetting the proper tools the pool was up ! Once up ,the uprights were crooked and I was told once the pool was filled & settled it would straighten out ! After 3 attempts to have them return I was told by their "service crew" they would return in the spring to drain & fix the pool ! It was mid july when we had the pool installed and short of just floating on a raft for fear of the pool collapsing , we took it easy as the uprights never seemed to properly settle after the water was filled into the pool! Well now upon opening of the pool , and planning on calling them as stated on the paperwork on their last try at fixing this issue , it's now leaking water like crazy ! I immed called them & they told me to immed drain the pool halfway as the integrity is in fear of collapsing ! I then had to purchase a hose long enough to go from my yard to the street and sifer the water out myself ! They're telling me it's their busy season and they have "other customers " and I'll have to wait until NEXT friday for them to "take a look " my yard was filled with water , I had purchased a pool opening kit which costed me $100 only to now have the pool turn green and the liner is now shrinking ! Now on friday i get a phone call that they need to bump me to saturday ! i returned the call and spoke to a "brian" to which he was very nasty ! he told me to send pictures so that when they do come they will know what tools they need ! All the uprights are crooked and they are telling me to send pictures , which I've done over and over again, last year as this issue has been since the pool was installed ! After looking on the Internet it seems island rec is also called island WRECK by many many consumers ! It cost me over 3 thousand dollars for the pool without install which they misrepresent as well as town coding issues ! Now today Monday , Memorial Day, of course because the pool is half filled the liner has now torn ! There is *** that was NOT there ! It also appears the seam that surrounds the pool is starting to come undone ! This pool can very well collapse now and I explained this to Brian ! He told me even if the uprights weren't attached the pool would be safe ! I then told him to install a 20x18 pool in his mothers yard with no uprights and just the buttresses and have her swim in it ! He then hung up on me ! This pool was purchased with good intentions for therapy for myself as I suffer from Multiple Sclerosis ! I thought it would help my legs and body feel better , evidently it's been nothing but a stressful experience and I want this remedied ! I asked them to bump my appt sooner like they changed my original one and was told no ! So now this coming Saturday they are "supposed " to come and "take a look" this is awful to do to someone with a disability and I feel like the minute I signed the credit card receipt Island rec aka Island WRECK mis advertised everything from price to install price to customer service issues and now I have a pool that cannot be used! Can you please help me with this issue ! They are nasty when you call and everyone who's anyone there claims to be a manager ! I take notes wherever I call and who, I speak to and not ones person I've dealt with has held to their word ! They showed up saturday in a beat up pick up truck with a wheel barrel in it ! My appt was scheduled for 11-1 & they rang my bell at 8:15 holding a rake !!! I thought it was a landscaper. I own a mother daughter home & my 67 year old mother lives downstairs, when she answered the door she told them if they thought a rake would fix the issues then they are going to have problems. They then walked into the yard & said that they cant do anything as they were told they were her to fix uprights and no mention of the liner. My mother then said well we have a problem & they said "your threatining us and we are calling the police" I just awoke and came outside to this & then then got in the truck & left !! Mr. Kemp who I have been having communicationwith throught this ordeal called me & said he felt being I was having so many issues he would reschedule this again and send his "TOP" crew out to rectify the issue. He gave me a new liner that is thicker to which I had to go to their warehouse in Deer Park to pick up myself, and the new appt was for this past Thursday June 5th!! He then said to drain the pool down to one inch so that when they do come they will just poke holes in the liner to release the water , that they would replace the old liner & see what can be done to fix the uprights & the pool. Well, the crew showed up & they had no idea they were replacing a liner, at first they said they couldnt ddo anything because there was still water in the pool that was over a inch , to which i took a tape measure out & showed it was less than an inch!! They then called the main office I believe & they must have told them they have to fix the issues, They drained the remainign water , removed the liner & all that was left was the metal frame, they said to me , " wow , the last crew who did the work , must have had a really hot day" as nothing was leveled, the uprights were installed crooked or backwards & the buttresses were installed improperlly. So basically short of pulling the whole pool apart they had to re level & re set the whole pool. Thus , they had to dig around the pool to do so !! When they first installed the pool in July of last year after they dug the ground they informed me I was responsible for the back filling , its been a year I certainally wasnt leaving the backfill in my yard, so now once again I have backfill, which is 10xs worse than last year, Around the perimeter of the pool its at least 2 feet of backfill that goes almost 1-2 feet into the ground. The beams are exposed the bricks are exposed, my yard looks like a tornado hit it. They forgot to give the crew the gasket for the skimmer, so they could not complete the job either. They toldme to fill the pool a foot a day as the new liner would need time to stretch, of course I cannot run the filter becasue its not connected as there is no gasket & the pool is now sitting in water again !!! You would think they would come back the next day for this, but now Im being told it wont be until Thursday of this week, ( june 12th) . I assumed once the returnedthe would backfill the pool & now I am being told " thats not up for discussion" as they did their part in fixing the issues. Yet because of their shoddy work, I have a yard thats a disaster, a ladder that I spent hundreds on just thrown in my yard, beams exposed, & a dug up yard ! I feel they shoudl backfill the pool as this was NOT my mistake to being with, other than buying the pool from these people !!! I would not have these issues had the work been done correctly the first time & now IAM RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS ??? The pool is also not right yet either, Its buckling on the sides & they are tellin me that will go away once its filled ! This has become a nightmare & I feel that they need to be exposed for this. There are tons & tons of complaints all over the internet about their workmanship, their miss advertising & not doing the proper thing for the consumer !!! They told me I can send a letter to the owner at his post office box & complain, But here is no way they can further help me !!! I need outside help & I am hoping YOU can do this for me & get them to just do the right thing here. I want a pool that I can enjoy & not be afraid its going to colapse & a yard that doesnt look like a bomb hit it!! I begged them to rectify this & they are now telling me its my responsibility. How would they like it if this was done to their family member !! This is horrendous & awful !!! Weather or not their policy is not to backfill after all I have been through they should make a exception. Ive also asked for copies of my warranties & have yet to get them !! According to mr kemp I have a lifetime warranty on the liner & pool . yet they have not produced such !!! Since last year !!!! Today August 13, 2014 , presented a NEW problem, the pool is now "bowing" outwards , it looks like it is about to colapse on one side ... I feel at this point it is a defected pool ... I have no children I use it to float around in & as therapy for MS, so no one is jumping swimming or ruff housing in this pool. I really am at my wits end here & feel that I cant battle Island rec alone any longer.. Can someone please help me. As a person suffering with MS this is greatly stressing me out and stress causes flair ups.. I called them today & they are supposed to send someone to "look" at the pool tmrw. I want the whole "kit & kabodle" replaced at this point as I am in fear of going in the pool

Island Recreational - Pool Installation Review from Fresno, California

Wish I would have read these reviews before buying a pool from Island Rec. We purchased a pool 3/2013 and what a disaster right from the beginning. Long story short their surveyor tells us to buy the wrong bricks, fails to tell us about a digging out fee being that we had an existing pool. When their installers come to install he tells us it's an additional $500, we call and are told that's the price. Their installer tells us it's not a great pool but will do, should have listened to him. The end of 2014 the pool is rusted and we're told we need to contact the manufacturer that IR isn't responsible. I contacted the manufacturer and they will send us a new pool wall we have to pay the $300 shipping, called IR about replacing the pool wall and I was told it wouldn't be until the end of July and I need a new liner and would have to pay take down and reinstall fee which all in all is about $900-****. Now this what I call good customer service - NOT. To by business to a more repreable pool company with better customer service.

Island Recreational - Aquabot Turbo Review from North Babylon, New York

I bought a aqabot turbo in 2013.from the Deer Park store. Just over a year later it stopped working.

I brought it to the service center in Massapequa August 18 and were told they would evaluate it and call to tell us what was wrong with it and if we wanted it repaired . After several phone calls from us to customer service 516 520 **** we never heard anything back.

Now we got in touch with someone on October 6th we were told the repair center is closed and it needs a pump motor costing 325.00 but it was not fixed and they are just going to ship it to the Deer Park store for us to pick up. We buy all our pool supplies from you and are very disappointed with that kind of customer service

Pool Maintenance Contract

This is the last year of my maintenance contract. I called to ask about renewing it and I was told that I must go into the store. After about an hour of driving around Deer Path looking for the store that was not on Commack Rd as advertised. I went into the store and the kids working there did not know anything about a maintenance contract. finally someone came from the back and told me that I had to wait till August. After I got back home I called the store and spoke to a manager who told me that the worker I spoke with on the phone did not know anything about contracts that is why I was given the wrong information.

I called regarding a part for my filter system. I asked if I can be transferred to the parts department. They said they can't, there are no phones in that department. I asked why not and what am I supposed to do now. They said I have to travel to their Hicksville store with my part in hand and IF they have a replacement I should be good. IF THEY have a replacement, shouldn't they have one or at least tell me if they do or don't. Welcome to the world of technology you bunch of idiots. Customer service with an attitude. Get a phone line run in the parts department and have someone answer a few questions, is it that hard. This company is the worst, how do they stay in business is crazy.
